Worst Blizzard in Chicago History
It was in January, fifty-four years ago, that the worst recorded blizzard in Chicago history occurred. The Chicago blizzard of 1967 fell over two days, dumping a record-setting 23 inches of snow in Chicago and the Chicago suburbs. Just two days before the storm hit, the high temperature was 65 degrees. The blizzard came as a total surprise. Four inches of snow was predicted to fall that day. The snow began falling at 5:02 AM on January 26 and didn’t stop falling until 10:10 AM the next morning. Many people were trapped in their cars and had to be dug out.
