After Christmas Fire Safety Tips for Lakeview?
1/5/2022 (Permalink)
My sister’s Christmas tree was bone dry. While she was at work, I took down the old tree and replaced it with a new, fresh tree so I wouldn’t have to worry about her tree going up in flames. I dragged the old tree out to the balcony and tossed it over the side. When the old tree hit the ground, all of the needles flew off the tree, leaving behind a skeleton!
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more home fires happen during the winter months than at any other time of the year. Taking down the holiday lights and disposing of the old Christmas tree are two ways of reducing your chance of having a post-holiday fire emergency.
SERVPRO® of Gold Coast/Lincoln Park/Lakeview offers these after Christmas safety tips from the NFPA:
- Get rid of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage or placed outside against the house.
- Check with your local community to find a recycling program
- Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer
Lakeview residents will benefit from the City of Chicago’s Christmas tree recycling program. This recycling program offers many locations throughout the city to drop off your old tree.
