Winter Weather has Arrived - Be Prepared Now
1/18/2024 (Permalink)
We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day.
Winter has arrived in the Midwest, and SERVPRO of Downtown Chicago / Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview wants everyone to be prepared for the next big winter storm and offers these tips from the Red Cross:
Winter Storm WARNING: Life-threatening, severe weather conditions have begun or will begin within 24 hours.
Blizzard WARNING: Sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 miles per hour or greater are expected, plus considerable falling or blowing snow reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile, expected to prevail for three hours or longer.
Other winter storm words to listen for:
- WIND CHILL Temperature: How cold people and animals feel when outside. As wind increases, heat is carried away from your body faster, driving down your body temperature and making you feel much colder. The wind chill temperature is not the actual temperature but how wind and cold feel on exposed skin.
- Winter Storm OUTLOOK: Winter storm conditions are possible in the next two to five days. Stay tuned to local media for updates.
- Winter Storm WATCH: Winter storm conditions are possible within the next 36 to 48 hours. Review your winter storm plans and stay informed about weather conditions.
- Winter Weather ADVISORY: Winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous but not life-threatening if you are cautious.

Be Prepared for Colder Weather

We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day.
Winter has arrived in the Midwest and now is the time to prepare for colder weather. SERVPRO of Downtown Chicago / Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview offers these tips from the American Red Cross to protect your pipes from freezing:
- Add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
- Drain water from swimming pools and water sprinkler supply lines following the manufacturer's or installer's directions
- Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
- Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the garage and under the kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold-water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
- Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes, like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼ inch of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.
- Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from freezing

Heavy Rains can cause Flash Flooding
8/24/2023 (Permalink)
We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day.
The Midwest has experienced some severe weather events that have caused significant damage to homes and commercial properties in our area. SERVPRO of Downtown Chicago / Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview is trained and certified to restore storm damage by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). Heavy rains can cause flash flooding, so it is a good idea to know what to do when faced with a flash flood situation. Here are some flash flood safety tips from the National Weather Service:
- During periods of heavy rains, stay away from flood-prone areas such as stream beds, drainage ditches, and culverts
- Move to higher ground if flooding threatens your area
- If you live or work in flood-prone areas, remain alert during periods of heavy rain
- Be especially cautious at night as it is harder to recognize flood dangers
- Never drive your car into water of unknown depth. Most flash flood deaths occur when people drive their vehicles into flood waters. Remember: Turn Around Don’t Drown!
- If your vehicle stalls, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground. Flood water may rise quickly, cover the vehicle, and sweep it away.
- Stay out of flooded areas. The water may still be rising and very swift. A rapidly flowing stream can sweep you off your feet and sweep your vehicle downstream.

How Can Technology Make it Easier to Inventory My Lincoln Park Home?
7/12/2022 (Permalink)
We restore storm damage 24-hours a day in Chicago.
Our Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, and Lakeview team can help you with the insurance process and paperwork when you have storm damage. We know that having an up-to-date inventory of household items and belongings helps insurance claims to settle faster. Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute for using technology to make your home inventory easier.
- Take pictures – Create a photo record of your belongings. Capture important individual items as well as entire rooms, closets, or drawers. Label your photos with what’s pictured, where you bought it, the make or model—whatever information might be important to replacing and/or getting reimbursed for the item. Use your smartphone or digital camera—some give you the capability to put in the description of the item when saving the photo.
- Tape it – Walk through your house or apartment videotaping and describing the contents. For example, you might describe the contents of a kitchen cabinet: “Poppies on Blue by Lenox, service for 12 that includes a dinner plate, salad plate, bowl, cup, and saucer. Purchased in 2015.”
- Use an app – There are many mobile app options that can help you create and store a room-by-room record of your belongings.

Thunderstorm-Created Waves Cause Damage to Properties on Gold Coast Shore?
4/13/2022 (Permalink)
We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Chicago.
Our local team in Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, and Lakeview responds to many forms of storm damage each year. While Illinois residents will never have to worry about being hit by a tsunami, properties along the Lake Michigan coast may be endangered by a seiche.
What is a seiche?
According to the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS), unlike tsunamis that are caused by earthquakes, coastal landslides, or a meteor striking the ocean, a seich is caused by air pressure and wind. The ISGS describes the formation of seiches as follows:
1. A storm front moves over a large body of water, like Lake Michigan
2. The storm brings air pressure changes and strong downbursts of wind, causing one or sometimes a series of seiches to form
The largest recorded seiche struck Chicago’s lakeshore at 9:30 am on June 26, 1954. It approached from the southeast and hit the entire Illinois coast with a wave two to four feet high. The seiche continued to swell as it moved towards the North Avenue pier, reaching ten feet in height. Fishermen on the North Avenue pier and piers to the north at the entrance of Montrose Harbor were swept into the lake.

Stormwater Intrusion in Gold Coast Basement?
2/15/2022 (Permalink)
We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Chicago!
SERVPRO® of Gold Coast/Lincoln Park/Lakeview responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year in the Gold Coast area and offer these tips from the Insurance Information Institute for preventing basement water seepage:
- Reseal your basement. Water in the basement is often caused by cracks in building foundations or floor slabs. If you notice water seepage after heavy rain when you’ve never had a problem, it may mean that your once-waterproof cement floors and basement walls have deteriorated. Painting vulnerable areas with water sealant can prevent seepage.
- Make sure water drains away from the building. Seepage is exacerbated by soil that has settled in a way to make water flow toward the building. After a storm, and especially if the ground is already saturated, rainwater that flows towards the building goes down the outside of the foundation wall, potentially through any cracks.
- Install a backwater valve. Though less common than other causes of basement water, sewer backups are messy. Learn more about your sewer responsibilities and install and maintain a backwater valve, which allows sewage to go out, but not come back in.

How to Stay Safe During Power Outages Caused by Storm Damage in Lincoln Park
8/9/2021 (Permalink)
Power outages are common results of severe storm damage, no matter the type of storm. Typically, power outages impact the whole community and the economy by disrupting communications, transportation, and everyday business. Your main concern should be the safety of you and your family in the Lincoln Park area.
Staying Safe During A Power Outage
- Keep Devices Charged- Limit the use of all cell phones, iPads, and laptops so they don’t lose power. This step will guard your ability to get important information about the conditions in your area and enable you to contact emergency personnel if necessary
- Vehicles Safety- Cars and trucks can be used to recharge cell phones if your devices die, and additionally, they can be used to stay warm in the winter should you lose power due to storm damage
- Limit Phone Calls- Working cell towers may be overloaded by others in the affected area calling to check in on each other or using the internet. Cell phone providers recommend text messaging rather than calling during a disaster since text messages use much less network capacity and battery power
- Keep Warm- If winter storm damage causes a power outage, make sure to use your fireplace or wood-burning stove is available. However, you should only do this if you know it has been properly cleaned recently, otherwise, you additionally run the risk of fire damage and smoke damage to your home. Stockpile thick blankets, pillows, and heavy clothing just in case the storm forces everyone to stay put for a while.
See the FEMA prepared guide for more information about the effects of power outages.

SERVPRO® of Gold Coast /Lincoln Park /Lakeview responds to snow damage emergencies in the Lakeview area throughout the winter months. The extreme cold and storms in February brought record-breaking temperatures that haven’t been recorded in Chicago since 1936.
Snow removal is a dangerous activity that qualified individuals should do. If you plan to remove snow from your roof, the Federal Emergency Management Agency offers these safety measures to minimize the risk of personal injury:
- Any roof snow removal should be conducted following proper OSHA protocol for work on rooftops. Use roof fall arrest harnesses where applicable.
- Always have someone below the roof to keep foot traffic away from locations where falling snow or ice could cause injuries.
- Ensure someone confirms that the area below the removal site is free of equipment that could be damaged by falling snow or ice.
- Whenever the snow is being removed from a roof, be careful of dislodged icicles. An icicle falling from a short height can still cause damage or injury.
- When using a non-metallic snow rake, be aware that roof snow can slide at any moment. Keep a safe distance away from the eave to remain outside of the sliding range.
- Buried skylights pose a high risk to workers on a roof removing snow. Properly mark this hazard as well as other rooftop hazards.

Blizzard in Lincoln Park?
1/11/2021 (Permalink)
We are the storm mitigation specialists that Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, and Lakeview areas residents rely on!
Worst Blizzard in Chicago History
It was in January, fifty-four years ago, that the worst recorded blizzard in Chicago history occurred. The Chicago blizzard of 1967 fell over two days, dumping a record-setting 23 inches of snow in Chicago and the Chicago suburbs. We respond to Gold Coast storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day!
Windy City Initiation
I’ll never forget the first time I landed at the Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Our plane landed on a frozen tarmac, and outside the window, I could see nothing but ice and snow. We had to disembark from a staircase off of the plane and walk to the terminal. As soon as I got through the door of the plane, I was hit by a wall of icy cold that penetrated through all of the many layers of the winter clothing I was wearing! I immediately felt a deep respect for the people of Chicago, knowing these Illinois natives have to be incredibly strong and resilient to thrive in this kind of severe weather!

Beat the Summer Heat with these Safety Tips
8/4/2020 (Permalink)
Follow these tips to stay cool & hydrated this summer.
As we approach the middle of summer in the Chicagoland area extreme temperatures continue to rise, be ready to battle the summer heat by following these tips from the CDC:
Stay Cool:
- Wear appropriate clothing: Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
- Stay cool indoors: Stay in an air-conditioned place as much as possible. If your home does not have air conditioning, go somewhere that does, even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat.
- Plan outdoor activities carefully: Try to limit your outdoor activity to when it is coolest, like morning and evening hours.
- Pace yourself: Start slowly and pick up the pace gradually.
- Wear sunscreen: If you must go outdoors, protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat, sunglasses, and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.
- Avoid cooking hot meals: They add heat to your body!
Stay Hydrated:
- Drink plenty of fluids: Drink more fluids, regardless of how active you are. Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink.
- Replace salt and minerals: Sweating removes salt and minerals from the body that need to be replaced. A sports drink can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat.
- Keep your pets hydrated: Provide plenty of fresh water for your pets.
SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview want to make sure you stay cool this summer. Give us a call at (773) 935-6750 if you have any questions.
Severe Weather - Safety Tips for a Portable Generator
5/5/2020 (Permalink)
Keep your home running through the storm with the help of a portable generator.
Are you getting ready for the spring storms to arrive in the Chicagoland area? Power outages are a common occurrence during a severe storm and a portable generator is a great tool to help you through the power outage.
If you have a portable generator on hand for power outages during severe weather, follow the safety tips below provided by the American Red Cross.
- Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any partially enclosed area.
- To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use it in wet conditions. Operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy-like structure, such as under a tarp held up on poles. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.
- Install CO alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside sleeping areas to provide early warnings.
If you experience storm or water damage caused by a power outage in your home, please give SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview a call at (773) 935-6750.

Be Prepared for a Power Outage
3/30/2020 (Permalink)
Don't let a power outage leave you in the dark. Be prepared now.
Power Outages can disrupt your routine and sometimes they can result in damage to your home or business. According to Ready.gov here are some steps to help you prepare now if a power outage does occur:
- Take an inventory of the items you need that rely on electricity.
- Talk to your medical provider about a power outage plan for medical devices powered by electricity and refrigerated medicines. Find out how long medication can be stored at higher temperatures and get specific guidance for any medications that are critical for life.
- Plan for batteries and other alternatives to meet your needs when the power goes out.
- Sign up for local alerts and warning systems. Monitor weather reports.
- Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backup in central locations on every level of your home.
- Determine whether your home phone will work in a power outage and how long battery backup will last.
- Review the supplies that are available in case of a power outage. Have flashlights with extra batteries for every household member. Have enough nonperishable food and water.
- Use a thermometer in the refrigerator and freezer so that you can know the temperature when the power is restored. Throw out food if the temperature is 40 degrees or higher.
- Keep mobile phones and other electric equipment charged and gas tanks full.

Be Ready for Cold Weather
2/24/2020 (Permalink)
Be prepared before the snow falls.
If you live in the Midwest, then you understand that the weather can change quickly. The temperatures can fluctuate drastically from day to day. One day the temperatures are in the 50’s and the next day a winter storm is headed our way. Here are a few tips from the American Red Cross to protect yourself from the cold weather.
- Wear layered clothing, mittens or gloves, and a hat. Outer garments should be tightly woven and water repellent. Mittens or gloves and a hat will prevent the loss of body heat.
- Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from severely cold air. Avoid taking deep breaths; minimize talking.
- Watch for signs of hypothermia and frostbite.
- Keep dry. Change wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat.
- Stretch before you go out. If you go out to shovel snow, do a few stretching exercises to warm up your body.
- Avoid overexertion, such as shoveling heavy snow, pushing a vehicle, or walking in deep snow.
- Walk carefully on snowy, icy sidewalks. Slips and falls occur frequently in winter weather.

Hurricane Season is Here - Be Prepared!

Be Prepared for Hurricane Season!
Hurricane season is currently underway. For the Atlantic, the season begins June 1 and runs through November 30. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season began in mid-May and also ends November 30.
Hurricanes can be life-threatening as well as cause serious property threatening hazards such as flooding, storm surge, high winds, and tornadoes. While the primary threat is in coastal areas, many inland areas can also be affected by these hazards, as well as by secondary events such as power outages as a result of high winds and landslides due to rainfall.
Preparation is the best protection against the dangers of a hurricane. Plan an evacuation route and your emergency plan, take inventory of your property, and take steps to protect your home or business. For more information and preparation tips, visit the Ready campaign website at www.ready.gov/hurricanes.

Be Prepared if Lightning Strikes!
8/15/2018 (Permalink)
Stay safe during a thunderstorm that brings lightning with it!
We say in Chicagoland wait a few minutes and the weather will change. These are words to prepare for in the event of a thunderstorm that brings lightning with it! If possible, postpone your trip or activity if the weather forecast calls for a thunderstorm. If you need to venture out in the storm here are a few tips from the CDC to keep you safe:
Safety tips for Outdoors:
- Remember: When thunder roars, go indoors. Find a safe, enclosed shelter.
- The main lightning safety guide is the 30-30 rule. After you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Suspend activities for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.
- If no shelter is available, crouch low, with as little of your body touching the ground as possible. Lightning causes electric currents along the top of the ground that can be deadly over 100 feet away.
- Stay away from concrete floors or walls. Lightning can travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.
Safety Tips for Indoors:
- Avoid water during a thunderstorm. Lightning can travel through plumbing.
- Avoid electronic equipment of all types. Lightning can travel through electrical systems and radio and television reception systems.
- Avoid corded phones. However, cordless or cellular phones are safe to use during a storm.
- Avoid concrete floors and walls.
Lightning strikes may be rare, but they still happen and the risk of serious injury or death is severe. So take thunderstorms seriously.

Summer is Here! Watch out for Extreme Heat!
Summer has arrived in Chicagoland and so has the extreme heat. Please stay safe with the help of these tips from the American Red Cross:
- Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
- Avoid extreme temperature changes.
- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.
- Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
- Postpone outdoor games and activities.
- Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.
- If you do not have air conditioning, choose places you could go to for relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day (schools, libraries, theaters, malls).
- Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.
Recognize and care for heat related emergencies:
Heat exhaustion typically involves the loss of body fluids through heavy sweating during strenuous exercise or physical labor in high heat and humidity.
Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition in which a person’s temperature control system stops working and the body is unable to cool itself.

Tornado Safety Tips - Be Prepared!
3/20/2018 (Permalink)
Stay Safe form a Tornado!
Tornadoes are one of nature’s most violent storms and can cause death, injury, and destruction within seconds. Here a few tips from Ready.gov on how to protect yourself and your family at a time when every second counts.
Know your risk
What:
A tornado is a violently rotating column of air that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground and is often—although not always—visible as a funnel cloud. Lightning and hail are common in thunderstorms that produce tornadoes. Tornadoes cause extensive damage to structures and disrupt transportation, power, water, gas, communications, and other services in its direct path and in neighboring areas. Related thunderstorms can cause heavy rains, flash flooding, and hail.
Where:
About 1,200 tornadoes hit the United States every year and every state is at risk.
When:
Tornadoes can strike in any season, but occur most often in the spring and summer months. They can occur at all hours of the day and night, but are most likely to occur between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Tornado Facts:
The extent of destruction caused by tornadoes depends on the tornado’s intensity, size, path, time of day, and amount of time it is on the ground. Wind from tornadoes can reach more than 300 miles per hour, and damage paths can be more than 1 mile wide and 50 miles long. Wind from tornadoes can destroy buildings and trees, transform debris into deadly projectiles, and roll vehicles.
- They may strike quickly, with little or no warning.
- They may appear nearly transparent until dust and debris are picked up or a cloud forms in the funnel.
- Tornadoes have been known to move in any direction.
- Tornadoes can accompany tropical storms and hurricanes as they move onto land.
- Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water.
Know the Terms:
Familiarize yourself with these terms to help identify a tornado hazard:
- Tornado Watch - Tornadoes are possible. When there is a Watch, move to be near enough to a shelter or sturdy building to be able to get there quickly in a few minutes if there is a Warning or if you see signs of a tornado approaching. Remain alert for approaching storms.
- Tornado Warning - A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. Take shelter immediately.
During a Tornado:
If you are under a tornado warning, seek shelter immediately! Most injuries associated with high winds are from flying debris, so remember to protect your head.
Call SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview – 773-935-6750 if you experience storm damage.
Beware of Extremely Cold Temperatures!
2/1/2018 (Permalink)
If you experience a cold weather emergency, call SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview today at 773-935-6750
According to the National Weather Service, $2.84 million dollars of property damage was caused by extreme cold in 2015. Even scarier? Fifty-three people died and three were injured due to extreme cold the same year. It is important to be aware of the effect extremely cold temperatures can have on you. The two main conditions to be aware of are frostbite and hypothermia.
Frostbite is caused when your skin is exposed to extremely cold temperatures. Physical symptoms are white or grayish-yellow skin, skin that feels unusually firm or waxy, and numbness.
Hypothermia is when your body temperature falls to an abnormally low temperature, caused from long exposure to cold weather. Signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. If someone’s body temperature is below 95°F, seek medical attention immediately. To avoid these conditions, stay indoors if possible. If not, dress warm in layers and try to keep dry.

Winter Storms can cause Damage
1/23/2018 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview can help with Winter Storm Damage.
Cold weather, snow, and ice storms can cause severe damage to your home or business. When these types of disasters strike, immediate action is necessary to prevent additional damage to your property. SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview has the winter storm experience, expertise, and the resources to remediate damage caused by winter weather.
Ice Dams
An ice dam is formed when snow melts unevenly on a roof and refreezes into a dam at the edge of the roof, near the eaves. This dam prevents any further snowmelt from draining off of the roof. This standing water can back up under shingles, leak into a home, and cause significant water damage to ceilings, walls, and other areas. Ice dams can also tear off gutters and loosen shingles.
Roof Damage
Snow and ice can cause significant damage to your gutters and roof. The additional weight of snow and ice can even cause a roof to collapse. When there’s a cold snap, water can get into cracks and small spaces and expand when it freezes, causing larger cracks and more damage. The repetition of freezing and thawing cycles can cause small cracks to get larger.

Tips for being prepared for a Power Outage
12/7/2017 (Permalink)
Be prepared for a Power Outage!
Power outages can not only be dangerous to you and your family, but they can also cause immense stress if you are not properly prepared.
According to ready.gov:
Before a Power Outage:
- Build or restock your emergency preparedness kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, and first aid supplies.
- Make sure you have alternative charging methods for your phone or any device that requires power.
- Charge cell phones and any battery powered devices.
- Know where the manual release lever of your electric garage door opener is located and how to operate it.
- Purchase ice or freeze water-filled plastic containers to help keep food cold during a temporary power outage.
- Keep your car’s gas tank full-gas stations rely on electricity to power their pumps. If you use your car to re-charge devices, do NOT keep the car running in a garage, partially enclosed space, or close to a home, this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Learn about the emergency plans that have been established in your area by visiting your state’s or local website so you can locate the closest cooling and warming shelters.
- If you rely on anything that is battery-operated or power dependent like a medical device determine a back-up plan.
During a Power Outage
- Only use flashlights for emergency lighting, candles can cause fires.
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Most food requiring refrigeration can be kept safely in a closed refrigerator for several hours. An unopened refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours.
- Take steps to remain cool if it is hot outside. In intense heat when the power may be off for a long time, consider going to a movie theater, shopping mall or “cooling shelter” that may be open in your community. If you remain at home, move to the lowest level of your home, since cool air falls. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.
- Put on layers of warm clothing if it is cold outside. Never burn charcoal for heating or cooking indoors. Never use your oven as a source of heat. If the power may be out for a prolonged period, plan to go to another location (the home of a relative or friend, or a public facility) that has heat to keep warm.
- Turn off or disconnect appliances and other equipment in case of a momentary power “surge” that can damage computers and other devices. Consider adding surge protectors.
- If you are considering purchasing a generator for your home, consult an electrician or engineer before purchasing and installing.
- Only use generators away from your home and NEVER run a generator inside a home or garage, or connect it to your home's electrical system.
If you experience damage to your home or business after a storm, call SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview at 773-935-6750 to remediate your damage.

What we call “clean” water when referring to water damage is water from a broken supply line or a leaky faucet. Clean water is pretty self-explanatory; it comes from a clean source. Rain water CAN be considered clean water if it is an isolated incident not related to wide spread flooding.
The second type of water is “grey” water. Grey water is slightly contaminated water. A good example of grey water is drain from a dishwasher. Keep in mind that water types can change. Clean water left too long without cleanup becomes grey water as bacteria and other contaminates can begin to grow.
The final classification is “black” water. Black water is highly contaminated as it is the result of encountering sewage, chemicals, or harmful bacteria. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.
SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview always recommends you leave water damage cleanup to the professionals. The type of water determines our protocol for proper cleanup.

Safety First After a Flood

Be prepared after a Flood
AFTER A FLOOD
SAFETY FIRST (For businesses and home owners)
Account that all employees or family members are safe by establishing evacuation plans in advance, identifying areas outside the building that are designated meeting places. Assign select individuals to keep a list of their assigned team’s names and contact numbers in order to account for their whereabouts.
If water enters the building and evacuation becomes impossible, move to an upper floor, and wait for rescuers.
While evacuating, avoid attempting to drive through floods or rising water, nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are auto-related.
Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall.
Use no open flames (there may be gas escaping from ruptured mains).
Avoid floodwaters. Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged. If the water has entered the structure through the flooding of a creek, stream or river, or if it has filtered through insulation during its intrusion, it is considered to be black water and could be hazardous to your health. Avoid contact with contaminated items as much as possible.
Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.
Listen for news reports to learn if the community’s water supply is safe to drink.
Return only when authorities indicate it is safe.

Thunderstorm Safety Tips

Keep your family safe!
Here are some guidelines to follow to help keep you and your family safe:
- The best defense against thunderstorms is to stay inside a sturdy building or shelter that can protect you from deadly lightning, large hail, damaging winds, flooding rain and tornadoes. Fortunately, thunderstorms typically do not last very long and will most often pass by your location in less than one hour.
- Once in a shelter, stay away from windows and avoid electrical equipment and plumbing. Remember to bring pets inside. If there is time, secure loose objects outside as these objects often become dangerous flying debris in high winds.
- Postpone outdoor activities until the storms have passed.
- If caught outside, take shelter in a sturdy enclosed building or hard top automobile immediately. Avoid open spaces, isolated objects, high ground and metallic objects.
- Get out of boats and away from bodies of water. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning.
If a tornado is spotted, act quickly and move to the lowest level basement of your shelter, putting as many walls between yourself and the outside as possible.
